The Open Wheel Modified feature was marred by a 1st lap crash involving Ron Schnieder. His spin in turn 4 resulted in hard contact with the inside wall. Schneider was unhurt, though his car was far less fortunate. On the restart, Brandon Howell took the lead over veteran Gerald Wilkerson and Chris Cotto. Cotto moved to 2nd on lap 8 and overtook Howell 2 laps later. Dirt track expert Todd Jones moved into 2nd on lap 13, while Howell had a rear view mirror full of points leader Ryan Redmon.
